A year after her US Open final, Leylah Fernandez continues to learn

“How do you view the past year?
I’m happy with the way I played. Of course, it’s not exactly what I expected. I thought everything was going to be perfect. But I also knew that the road would be bumpy and that we would have to find solutions to get through the difficult times. It will have been a great experience, very enriching, and not only in terms of tennis. I also learned a lot about myself, and I still do. I know better what I like to do, which helps me in difficult times. I try to become a better person and continue to have fun on the circuit.

Did you have the opportunity to speak with Emma Raducanu and talk about what you accomplished last year?
We’ve seen each other before, yes, but we’re not talking about New York. I think we are in the same spirit, we focus on the present, not on the past. We know what happened in New York, we know. It was fun, but we are now focused on the upcoming tournament, on our training. We are happy to see each other again, we are happy that the other is well and we wish each other the best.

Do you see a message in your final last year?
I believe the message is that nothing is impossible and dreams can come true. And that it happened in New York is even greater because it is the city where everything is possible. The message is that you should only listen to what people say and believe in your chances, keep working, be resilient and keep pushing your limits. Then your dreams will come true, one way or another. It was a perfect scenario for Emma and me. We took different paths, but we were able to get through the trials. We have achieved our dreams. »
