Three French people will play in the quarter-finals of the Winston-Salem tournament, in North Carolina (United States). Richard Gasquet was the first to qualifyat the expense of American Steve Johnson (6-7 , 6-4, 6-3), Wednesday, early evening. He was joined overnight by Adrian Mannarino and Benjamin Bonzi. In the quarters, Gasquet will face Serbian Laslo Djere, 89th in the ATP rankings.
Mannarino, 65th player in the world, defeated Albert Ramos (6-3, 6-3), ranked 42nd. Facing the Spaniard, who led 5-3 in their previous confrontations, the Frenchman was effective, converting his first opportunity into a break to lead 5-3, before pocketing the first set on his serve with a white game.
Adrian Mannarino tightened the noose again at the start of the second set, breaking again. More solid in all areas of the game, he never conceded a single break point, winning in 1:26. He will be opposed in the next round to the Franco-American Maxime Cressy (34th in the world).
Thiem corrected by Jack Draper
For his part, Benjamin Bonzi was just as solid to get rid of Brazilian Thiago Monteiro (7-5, 6-2), who occupies 67th place in the ATP rankings. Broken in the first set and led 3-1, the French player however restored the situation, before making the difference in the 12th game, on opposing service.
Dominant in the exchanges (25 winning moves against 15), Bonzi again bent his opponent in a more expeditious second set. In the quarter-finals, he will face Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp, 23rd in the world and seeded n°2.
Wednesday was also marked by the elimination of the Austrian Dominic Thiem, winner of the US Open in 2020, dryly beaten by the Briton Jack Draper (6-1, 6-4).
