In a 100% Russian clash, Andrey Rublev was the strongest on Monday against Daniil Medvedev for the first match of the red group at the Turin Masters (6-7 (7), 6-3, 7-6 ). The 7th in the world, who has never gone beyond the group stages in this competition, has directly taken the upper hand over his opponent of the day, thanks in particular to a more flexible and liberated game.
But broken from the start (4-1), Daniil Medvedev managed to accelerate the pace and above all to return to contact with the 25-year-old player by picking up the score. It was therefore in the tie-break that the two Russians faced each other. Yet off to a good start, Andrey Rublev ended up giving in (6-7 ).
More dominating in the second set, the 25-year-old made Daniil Medvedev doubt several times before pocketing the second set quite easily (6-3). In a final tighter set, the two players fought a real battle. Game after game, none managed to come off and break. It was once again in the tie-break that this meeting was played.
More solid, Andrey Rublev managed to surprise the winner of the 2020 edition and to seize, after 2h30 of combat and on his 5th match point, his first victory in this red group (6-7 6-3, 7-6 ). For the second game of the day, Novak Djokovic will meet Stefanos Tsitsipas at 9 p.m.
