Angola win Women’s AFCON and qualify for 2023 World Cup with Cameroon and Congo

New continental triumph for Angola. Big favourites, the “Perolas” (Pearls) won the African Cup of Nations by largely dominating Cameroon in the final on Saturday in Dakar (29-19). This is their fifteenth CAN title since 1989 (by far the record for the event), the twelfth out of the last thirteen editions.

Natalia Santos (11 goals) and Helena Paulo (10) alone scored nearly three-quarters of Angola’s goals in the final. The Messina Stelvia Pascoal was much more discreet. The Cameroonians were very clearly dominated, as in the final of the 2021 edition (15-25). The teammates of the former French junior international Karicham Ekoh (3 goals) however won their ticket for the 2023 World Cup in Denmark, Norway and Sweden.

The Senegalese disappointment

Big disappointment on the other hand for Senegal and its former Bleue Claudine Mendy. After coming close to a feat in the semi-finals against Angola (21-24 ap), the host country lost a breath against Congo in the match for 3rd place (19-20 including 5 goals for the right-back of Celles-sur-Belle Fanta Diagouraga). It is the Congolese who will accompany the two finalists to the World Cup.
