Carlos Alcaraz before entering the Rolex Paris Masters: “I don’t feel the pressure”

“It looks like you arrive at the Rolex Paris Masters with knee discomfort. What can you say about this physical problem two days before entering the tournament?
It’s just a small problem, which all players can have with their body at the end of a season. It’s normal, you have to play with it. It’s nothing too serious. I feel good and I’m ready to play here.

You are now playing to finish n°1 at the end of the season, is it an additional pressure or more a challenge, a pleasure to fight for this objective?
I don’t feel the pressure. I just set, for myself, this objective of finishing n°1. I know it will be difficult to achieve, that there are many great players behind me who can be too. But I don’t put any pressure on myself about it. I try to give the best on each tournament, to continue to grow and to enjoy playing tennis. It was my dream to win a Grand Slam, to become world No. 1, but I never expected to achieve that at 19. It all happened so fast, faster than I could imagine. It was unexpected. Today, I can realize what I have accomplished, but I haven’t changed as a person. The people around me, my family, my staff, my friends, my normal life, nothing has changed.

Tell us about the particular game lost (6-4, 7-5) against Hugo Gaston right here last year in the round of 16. Is this one of your most painful memories on the circuit?
It was definitely a tough match, probably one of the toughest I’ve played on the circuit. But I think this match helped me a lot, in terms of experience, of managing the pressure. This year I’ve played so many big games, had so many great moments, fighting for good things. For all that, last year’s match here helped me, to know how to react when everyone supports your opponent. I had to learn from this game and that’s what I did. This game really helped me a lot this year. »
