Caroline Garcia, semi-final at the US Open: “I did the best I could”

“It was a difficult day for you, was there any nervousness on the pitch?
Sure, and I think that’s pretty normal. When I started the tournament in the first round, I was already stressed. Each match means a lot and you want to win them. Today (Thursday), it was the semi-finals and I knew what a victory could bring. It’s been a dream since I was little. The start of the match was not good. I made mistakes on important points. The arms and legs didn’t move as well and given my game, mistakes can happen quickly. I did the best I could.

What made Jabeur so effective in your opinion?
There have been a lot of things (laughs). She obviously served well with a lot of firsts, especially in the first set. I had more opportunities at the end of the second set. But she read my serve very well, always bringing back my first balls. I took the bullets a little later. I wasn’t moving that fast. I didn’t get many free points.

You had a very good period, how will this result affect the rest for you?
Obviously, there is a disappointment with the defeat today. It wasn’t a great game. But there are still a lot of positives to take: the semi-final here, the jump in the standings (she will again enter the Top 10 on Monday). I know where I was a few months ago, a few years ago. So we have to take the positive. Tomorrow, we will try to learn as much as possible from this match because I am sure that there are many things that I can learn and that give me hope for the future. »
