PSG were not spared in the draw for the next group stage of the Champions League on Thursday. The French champions, whose ambition is to win the competition, will start it against the Italians of Juventus, the Portuguese of Benfica and the Israelis of Maccabi Haifa in Group H.
It is the fourth time in the history of PSG that it will be opposed to the Turinese in European competitions. Until then, he has always been eliminated (in the Cup of Nations in 1984, in the UEFA Cup in 1990 and 1994 and in the European Supercup in 1997). Their last confrontation, during the winter of 1997 in the European Supercup, had even been marked by a heavy defeat for the players of Ricardo and Joël Bats against Zinédine Zidane and his partners, in the first leg in a refrigerated Parc des Princes (1- 6).
Paris has also already been opposed to Lisbon on three occasions (C3 in 2006-2007 and 2010-2011 and C1 in 2013-2014). In the first two confrontations in the Europa League, he had been eliminated. For his only opposition with Benfica in the Champions League, the last to date in the group stage, he won at home (3-0), but lost on the return to Estádio da Luz (1-2). But that didn’t stop him from qualifying.
It won’t be a first against Maccabi either. In 1998 in the Coupe des Coupes, then in 2010 in the Europa League, Paris had already gone to Israel with two defeats in the key (2-3 and 3-4). In C2, he had failed to reverse the result on the return (1-1), but in C3 yes, with a victory (2-0) and a qualification.
