Charles Leclerc after the failure of Ferrari’s strategy at the Hungarian GP: “It was carnage”

Even though he insisted on the importance of the upcoming debriefing at Ferrari, Charles Leclerc acknowledged on the arrival of the Hungarian Grand Prix his misunderstanding of his team’s strategy. Against his advice, he had to put on hard tires which made him dive in the classification, far from the winner Max Verstappen who flies to the World Championship.

On the transition to hard tires that did not work at other teams

“I don’t have the explanations for the moment. I don’t quite know what to say. We’ll have to look again. It’s difficult. I was asked the question: the mediums were really good. We were fast on the medium. They were still fairly new. I was confident and I said it on the radio. We decided to cover Max (Verstappen) with hard while he was in medium. It was carnage. We stopped five or six laps later (to pass) on soft. It made a run on soft. Anyway… I don’t have too many answers yet.

On the starting strategy with medium tires while his rivals were on soft

“Leaving has nothing to do with it. It was rather the right strategy. I saw things to go as far as possible with these second mediums. They were good tyres, I had a good feeling on them. I don’t understand. »

On the championship where he is 80 points behind Verstappen

“We will see race by race but we cannot hope to win the Championship if we continue to do races like this. I hope that the second part of the season will smile on us more. We have to improve. »
