Charles Leclerc (Ferrari), after the Mexican Grand Prix: “It hurts”

Charles Leclerc (6th, Ferrari): ” It hurts. We expected to be in a little more trouble here, but we found ourselves with a lot of difficulty, especially on the engine side, and that didn’t make things any easier. One minute is really a lot. The DRS was really broken at the end of Q3 and we were able to change it for today (sunday).

Engine-wise, we couldn’t change what we wanted to change, so I still had those problems, but that doesn’t explain the gap. There was maybe a tiny bit of performance in that, but not a minute on a race. »

Max Verstappen (Grand Prix winner, Red Bull): “Staying ahead after the first corner helped me a lot for the rest of the race. Of course, we also had a different strategy than the cars around us (Mercedes)but the car was really great.

We had to take care of our tyres; because the relay on the mediums was very long, but we succeeded. It’s been an amazing year so far. We’re really enjoying it, and we’ll try to go for more wins. »

Lewis Hamilton (2nd, Mercedes): “I was so close in that first stint, but I think the Red Bull was clearly too fast today (sunday). In the end, they had perhaps the best pneumatic strategy. I’m not sure it was the right tire in the end.

I thought we should have gone soft, we had the opposite tyre. It was fine in the first stint, but the hard tire was not there. Congratulations to Max, it’s great to be here on the podium and to separate the two Red Bull riders. »

George Russell (fourth, Mercedes): “In the first laps the tires were working very well and we reacted to the fact that (Nicholas) Latifi and Lewis were improving their times, but when I passed them I had no grip at all. The fact that Ferrari and Red Bull decided to go soft was good news.

They made a choice that we did not. When I was leading the race with the mediums, I felt good and I asked that we make this stint last. I think we have to bring out the positive. As a team, we are making progress at the moment. Compared to Ferrari, we were in better shape. »

Daniel Ricciardo (seventh, McLaren): “We made the mediums last a long time. I knew that, in the plane, if I could do a certain number of laps on the mediums, I could move on to the softs. I was out of the points, so I didn’t have much to lose. I was confident these tires could last, it was the right choice. »
