Clara Burel, qualified for the 2nd round of the US Open: “Try to surf on these victories”

“Tell us about the last few days after these rather special qualifications
After a somewhat unusual last round of qualifying, it’s not every day that it happens to be interrupted twice and moreover at these times of the match, I felt good. I had three matches in the legs, I had three or four days to recover so I continue my momentum.

For you, is this victory an achievement?
I want to say yes because I am still 130th in the world and she has just won Wimbledon. She is 25th in the world, but if she had had the Wimbledon points, she would be even higher so it is sure that it is a small achievement.

How did you prepare for this match because we know that she hits hard but also that she can make a mistake?
She can have very good passages where you can’t do much except watch the ball go by. She has good service. The objective was to return as much as possible and to be super solid. I knew she was going to make mistakes, there were some so I try to take advantage of them.

“Van Uytvanck has a rather special game, it goes very fast, she takes the ball very early so we can expect a bit of everything”

Four wins in a row, does that allow you to build a good cushion of confidence on which you can rely?
Of course, we have to try to surf on these victories as much as possible, especially since I like the conditions so we have to try to take advantage of them. I think today (tuesday)I preferred the moist heat more to her (smile).

We know that Thierry Champion is no longer your coach, who are you training with at the moment?
For now, I’m not working with anyone. I have my boyfriend who has been with me since qualifying and on a physical level, I am still with Paul Quétin but otherwise I manage on my own. Now, I live it rather well. It is certain that this summer, there were moments a little more complicated. Alone, it’s more difficult but it’s going well this week.

How do you imagine this second round against Alyson Van Uytvanck?
She has a rather special game. A bit like Rybakina, it goes very fast, she takes the ball very early so we can expect a bit of everything. I played it in Australia two years ago in the first round, I lost a hanging match. She’s a very good player, so it’s going to be difficult for sure. »
