Corentin Moutet stopped by Casper Ruud in the round of 16 of the US Open

There are no longer any French players in the men’s tournament at the US Open 2022. Corentin Moutet took too long to provide opposition truly worthy of his first round of 16 Grand Slam. Almost resigning, very early in the match, he pulled himself together a little but suffered, against the wise and solid Casper Ruud, a defeat in four sets (6-1, 6-2, 6-7 [4]6-2 in 3h20).

His two break points at the start of the match, in the end, were only an illusion. Because after having equalized with a game everywhere, Corentin Moutet did not obtain a single game point in this first round during which the rankings (7th for the Norwegian, 112th for the French) were respected wonderfully. Ruud even managed the best point of the match very early on, an area in which, if need be, Moutet could have started as favorite.

But it was the Norwegian, to validate the first break and lead 3-1, who slipped a splendid passing forehand at the end of the race, between the referee’s chair and the net post, below the level of the band. Moutet nevertheless returned the favor at the start of the third round, this time on the backhand, and a bit less spectacular.

“He is not in the fight at all”

Justine Henin, on Eurosport

These were the two high points of an unbalanced match between a player in the top 10 who always knew what to do and another very talented who never found his way to the grinta on a lasting basis. As often, Moutet let himself be won over by frustration, for example performing a dozen push-ups after a foul at the start of the second set or receiving a penalty point for a violent ball. Often positioned too far, often sideways on his initiatives (like these few climbs in socks), the Frenchman showed no form of rebellion for two hours. “ He’s not in the fight at all, it’s a dream turn for Casper Ruud, at this stage of the tournament.perfectly summed up Justine Henin, rather circumspect at the microphone of Eurosport.

Ruud less serene in the tie-break of the third set

Could the long break, at the end of the first two rounds, so that the two players change from head to toe, change the trend? Moutet tried to put more intention into the restart but, even though Ruud gave many more points for four games, the legs seemed to be unable to follow. It was his seventh match of the tournament, qualifying included… “I can’t do it, I have no solution”he launched to his coach, Laurent Raymond, after being broken at 2-2 in the third set. “Do you think I can win, do you believe it or not? » he asked him instead when he rejoined at 4-4. Faced with a less serene Ruud, he won the right to a tie-break crossed with the handbrake by the Norwegian, dominated 7 points to 4. Led 6-1, 6-2, 4-2 a few minutes earlier, Moutet was therefore really entitled to a fourth set!

What would have happened if he had made his fourth entry break point? Gradually, Ruud collected his wits and, although he seemed annoyed by the unusual number of shots he was missing, he regained the lead and did not let go, from his break at 2-1 . “It was harder than the scoreline suggested at the startRuud said at the stadium microphone; fortunately, I again showed myself capable of dictating the game in the fourth set. »

This US Open will allow Corentin Moutet to return to the top 100 in eight days, around 85th place in the world. In the quarter-finals, Casper Ruud will face Matteo Berrettini (14th), scorer in five sets (3-6, 7-6 [2]6-3, 4-6, 6-2) from Alejandro Davidovich Fokina (39th).
