Rennes broke their winning streak in a row at Lille on Sunday (5) but extended their unbeaten streak (10) by obtaining a rather fortunate draw under the roof of the Stade Pierre-Mauroy in front of 35,000 spectators (1-1 ).
The Lille captain, Fonte, opened the scoring, with the involuntary complicity of Mandanda, guilty of a handling error. Rennes, saved several times thereafter by its international goalkeeper, replied after the break from the penalty spot.
The Bretons, who conceded 19 shots against 2 on the Lille goal, remain alone on the 3rd step of the podium, but PSG (2-1 in Lorient earlier on Sunday) and Lens (2-1 in Angers, Saturday) are now 5 and 10 points ahead of them. And are guaranteed to remain first and second in the L1 during the World Cup, whatever the results of the final day, next weekend, before the planetary meeting in Qatar. Lille remains in 7th place.
The game: 1-1
The Rennais shot first, a volley at the end of the race from Bourigeaud on a reversal of play from Gouiri after an acceleration from Truffert on the left side (11th), but it was Lille who scored on a good combination launched by André Gomes, relayed by Cabella and concluded by Fonte, the quickest to push a ball to the bottom by Mandanda under pressure from David (1-0, 16th). The first act of the… big game for the international goalkeeper.
Dominant, the Mastiffs got all the hot situations of the first act: Cabella again forced the former Marseillais to relax (25th), Weah was familiar with his post (36th) and David eliminated all the defense before hitting too softly in his arms (40th). A penalty stupidly conceded by Bamba on a free kick without danger after the break revived the Rennais, Bourigeaud sanctioning the belting of Wooh with a perfect opposite foot against Chevalier (1-1, 58th). Miraculous.
In a more unbridled match, Lille took the lead and hit the uprights… three times: Djalo, served from a free kick by Ounas, came on to replace André Gomes at the end of the first period, with a header (65th), then Ounas on a cross-shot, and David, in the continuity of the action (71st). Twelve amounts affected since the start of the season, Ligue 1 record, and enough to feed regrets. Mandanda’s talent took over from luck against Bamba (78th) and André (90th +2) in the final minutes when Lille pushed to 11 against 10 after the exclusion of Meling (sole on Ounas, 90th).
Player: Timothy Weah
In an unexpected right-back role in a four-man defense, the American striker proved Paulo Fonseca right by mingling with the offensive animation of the Mastiffs without giving up anything defensively against Rennes, it is true, very little enterprising.
