Esport – Dragon Ball FighterZ: The French shine at EVO, Wawa crowned champion

It’s historic: for the first time since the game was released in 2018, French people have joined the Top 8 of Dragon Ball FighterZ at the EVO (Evolution Championship Series). Marwan “Wawa” Berthe was crowned champion on Sunday morning, after knocking down the American “Nitro” in the grand final, in front of the excited public of Las Vegas.

He had arrived as the big favorite for the next prestigious tournament his victory at the world, a few weeks earlier. However, he very nearly missed the title: in the semi-finals, he was sent to the lose bracket by the French “Yasha” by a crushing defeat.

On paper, Yasha had become the contender who seemed in contention for the title. But in a final match winner very attached, he lost 2 to 3 against Nitro. His only chance to come back up was therefore to defeat Wawa a second time; but the latter took his revenge in the final of the loser bracket with the same score, only to win against Nitro and win the title.

That’s not all: the French in the Top 4 formed a trio completed by Mohamed “Kayne” Sobti, who for his part took fourth place. His run was cut short by two losses to the two grand finalists; first Nitro in the semi-finals, then Wawa in the lose bracket.

In the meantime, the other EVO tournaments will continue until Monday. Frenchman Nathan “Mister Crimson” Massol’s title hopes on Street Fighter V are still permitted; he will play his first match of the lose bracket in the night from Sunday to Monday, to follow in French on MGG.
