Fijians and Australians world champions

The Australians, victorious on the world rugby sevens circuit this season, won the World Cup after their victory (24-22) against New Zealanders, double reigning world champions, on Sunday in Cape Town. A few moments later, the Fijians also won against New Zealand (29-12), thanks to a perfect first period (24-5).

Australia, who led 12-0 at the break, managed the feat of defeating the Black Ferns, Olympic champions in Tokyo, who had an equalizer, and therefore extra time, within their reach at the very end of the game, but Tennika Willison failed to convert teammate Alena Saili’s try.

Fiji still dominate New Zealand

The Fiji men’s team, Olympic champions in Tokyo against New Zealand, again dominated their New Zealand rivals (29-12). The Fijians, who had already beaten the Blacks in Tokyo in the Olympic final by an almost identical score (27-12), stole the world title from New Zealand. New Zealand, crowned in both men and women at the last World Cup in San Francisco in 2018, therefore leaves Cape Town with two silver medals.
