George Russell and Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) fastest in third free practice in Mexico City

Small surprise during the only “real” free practice session of this Grand Prix of Mexico, it was the two Mercedes which proved to be the fastest, by far. In the middle of the session, George Russell set a time of 1’18”399 which no one could beat afterwards. In the process, Lewis Hamilton managed the second time, 0”144 from his teammate. The most surprising element is the margin that the silver arrows have put with the competition since Max Verstappen was pushed back to almost half a second (+0”477) with his Red Bull.

Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) took fourth place, but nearly three tenths behind the double world champion (+0”724 on Russell). At the end of the session, the Monegasque complained on the radio about a single-seater that was far too understeered, struggling to turn correctly in all the winding parts of the circuit. Sergio Perez and Carlos Sainz follow in that order to complete the top 6.

The Habs struggling

Lando Norris (McLaren) set the best time for the “rest” of the field (+0”918) ahead of Valtteri Bottas and his Alfa Romeo (+0”991). Yuki Tsunoda (Alpha Tauri) and Alexander Albon, confirming the good arrangements of the Williams on the high top speed tracks, are in the top 10. The session was much less conclusive for the tricolors. At Alpine, Esteban Ocon and Fernando Alonso couldn’t do better than eleventh and thirteenth, with the Spaniard even making a few set-up changes towards the end of the session.

It was even more difficult for Pierre Gasly who sailed for a long time at the very end of the classification with a particularly capricious single-seater. He finally takes 15th place. In verve at Austin, the Aston Martins were also lagging behind with only 15th and 18th places, respectively for Lance Stroll and Sebastian Vettel.
