Gigantic simulation of transporting supporters to Qatar three months before the World Cup

The organizers of the world Cup circulated 1,300 buses on the streets of Doha on Thursday to simulate the transport of the hundreds of thousands of visitors expected during the competition (November 20 – December 18). It will sometimes be necessary to transport up to 300,000 people on the same day when the eight stadiums of the tournament are not all directly accessible by metro.

“These are the most complex transport operations ever mounted for a major sporting event”says Ahmad al Obaidly, head of Mowasalat, the operator of Qatar’s bus and taxi services.

Twice as many drivers

In the sweltering heat, hundreds of air-conditioned, but nearly empty, buses traveled between stadiums, metro stations and scheduled pick-up points. In anticipation of the competition, the bus operator doubled its number of drivers (14,000), mostly from Asia and Africa. Some of them sometimes played the role of supporters during the simulation operation.
