A week before the Champions Trophy between Paris and Nantes, Chambéry was the first French club to play an official match this season, on Saturday in the first preliminary round of the European League (C2). Invited by the European Federation after finishing 5th in the last French Championship, the Savoyard club took a small lead over the Romanians of Constanta in the first leg at Le Phare (27-23).
Richert is a hit
Benjamin Richert scored on his right wing (9 goals including 2 penalties), well supported by Spanish left-back Iosu Goni (5 goals). But the efficiency of the former Nantes Vitaly Komogorov (7 goals) allowed Constanta to stay in the game. Micke Brasseleur, the Frenchman who arrived at the Romanian club this summer from Aix, was however muzzled (0/4 in shooting).
Erick Mathé’s men will have to be solid on their return to the shores of the Black Sea, Saturday September 3, to join Montpellier, directly qualified for the second preliminary round thanks to their 4th place in the Starligue. Aix (3rd) is directly qualified for the group stage, which will begin on October 25.
