Chambéry has cleared the first hurdle on the road to the European League (C2) group stage. Saturday, the Savoyard formation validated its ticket for the second preliminary round by dismissing Constanta despite its defeat in Romania (22-23). Erick Mathé’s men were able to preserve the four-goal lead gained in the first leg to Le Phare, a week earlier (27-23).
They join Montpellier, directly qualified for the second round thanks to their fourth place last season in Liqui Moly Starligue (Aix, 3rd, is directly qualified for the group stage). The draw will take place on Tuesday.
A decisive effort in the last ten minutes
Quiet in the first period (3-7, 16th; 9-10 at halftime), “Team Chambé” found themselves in danger after the break. After a new goal from the former Nantes player Vitaly Komogorov (9 in total), Constanta had almost caught up (16-13, 41st). But in the last ten minutes, the left arm of Gustavo Rodrigues allowed Chambéry to turn the situation around for good (20-18, 53rd; 20-21, 57th).
The second preliminary round will be played on September 27 and October 4.
