Hand – European L. (H) – Montpellier and Chambéry spared in the draw for the 2nd round of the European League

The draw for the second preliminary round of the European League (C2) was not too bad with the French clubs on Tuesday in Vienna. Montpellier, which inherited the Swedes from Sävehof, and especially Chambéry, against Veszprem KKFT (Hungary), will start as favorites to join the group stage, where Aix awaits them, directly qualified thanks to its 3rd place in the Championship last season.

The MHB, which enters the competition at this stage and was in the first hat, escaped the scarecrows of the second hat, the new rich Norwegians of Kolstad and the Germans of Lemgo. For their return to C2 after reaching the quarter-finals of the Champions League but finishing only fourth in the Starligue in 2021-2022, the Héraultais will however have to be wary of a young but dashing Scandinavian formation, which pulverized the Romanians from Turda in the previous round (45-21, 34-30).

A prodigy from the Faroe Islands against Montpellier

Sävehof notably counts in its ranks the phenomenon of the Faroe Islands Elias Ellefsen a Skipagotu (20), the most anticipated young player in European handball, who will join Kiel in a year.

Chambéry, which appeared in the second hat after dismissing Constanta in the first round (27-23, 23-22), was spoiled with Veszprem KKFT, a modest Hungarian club which has little in common with its glorious neighbor Telekom Veszprem, one of the favorites for the title in the League of champions. In the first division since 2020 only, it will take the first steps in its history in the European Cup after reaching the cup final by surprise last year (he had been pulverized there by … Veszprem, 42-19).

Mainly made up of unknown Hungarian players, coached by Csaba Konkoly, former coach of the great women’s club Györ, this team seems well within reach of the Savoyards.
