“How do you feel before the start of this US Open?
Of course I am very impatient. I’m happy to have been able to train a little more. I feel like I’m ready. It’s good to be able to come back and learn more and more every year. I feel my progress so I hope I can show it in my matches.
You played again with Rafael Nadal, your idol, here at an event in favor of Ukraine…
Well Rafa is awesome. I never imagined, as a kid, playing next to him and being on the same team. The whole event was awesome. I am quite happy that we were able to collect such a sum. It’s good that as an athlete you can have that kind of impact and lead by example.
“I don’t want to focus on that for now, there’s a tournament coming up”
You were very critical with Paula Badosa on the balls used during this US Openis this something that you will continue to claim (to have the same balls as the men)?
Paula and I are going to stick to what we said. Of course I don’t like these balls. But I’m here to play a tournament and play my best tennis. Everyone has the same playing conditions. So I try to adapt and learn to play with these balls. It’s different for everyone because it depends on the style of play. But I don’t want to focus on that for now, there’s a tournament coming up.
With Serena Williams who is going to stop, Federer who we see less, Djokovic and Nadal who are aging, how do you see the future for tennis?
It’s a difficult question because on my side, I focus on the next tournament. I don’t think where I belong in a few years. These players, I looked at them younger. It’s like they’ve always been competitive. It’s going to be weird, different. I hope tennis will continue in a good direction. »
