On November 1, to everyone’s surprise, Montpellier announced the departure of Olivier Azam, co-head coach alongside Jean-Baptiste Elissalde, under the aegis of manager Philippe Saint-André. “To follow up on the wish for family reunification”, then explained the official press release. Azam had however been promoted last April, a few months before the conquest of the first title of champion of France in the history of the Hérault club, with a contract extended until 2025.
To prepare the match in Toulon on November 6 (16-26), Joan Caudullo had worked with the first team to make up for the hasty departure of Azam. Former hooker, who played in Montpellier for a large part of his career, Caudullo (40) has been running the MHR training center since 2020.
“We will give ourselves the time to find the right person or people, knowing that the players adhere to what Joan offers them. »
As Philippe Saint-André explained to us on Tuesday, he will remain in the staff of the first team until the end of the season: “ We should not change until the end of the season. John (Caudullo) bump on the keys, the scrums and the balloons carried. Jean-Baptiste Elissalde manages the collective and Alexandre Ruiz works a little more on defense. » Without forgetting Bruce Reihana who continues his work on skills and footwork.
An external reinforcement would not be on the agenda before the end of the season. “We are thinking about it for July 2023 but, after discussion with the staff and the players, we prefer to keep a form of stabilitycontinues “PSA”. Joan knows the players, the operation, the organization… If there are changes, they will be made in July. We’re not gonna bring anybody (in staff) to bring someone and work in an emergency. We will give ourselves the time to find the right person(s), knowing that the players adhere to what Joan offers them. »
