Karim Benzema voted player of the year by UEFA

On the sidelines of group stage draw of the next Champions League, Karim Benzema was voted player of the year by UEFA on Thursday in Istanbul. The French striker and captain of Real Madrid (34 years old, 97 selections), winner and top scorer (15) of the last Champions League, edged out his club partner, Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, and Manchester City playmaker Kevin de Bruyne.

This is the first time in his career that Benzema has received this distinction. The former Lyonnais, also winner of the League of Nations with the France team in October 2021, is a big favorite for the next Ballon d’Or France Football, which will be awarded on October 17.

“I’m really happy, proud to be here, he reacted. I will thank my club, my president (Florentino Perez) and my trainer (Carlo Ancelotti), as well as all my teammates, because without them I cannot win these kinds of trophies. For me, the most important thing every time is to win collective trophies and as I often say, when you do things well on the pitch, in the end, there are individual things. I am really happy and proud of my journey. »
