Lens wins with authority in Monaco and takes the lead in Ligue 1

The game: 1-4

We can’t really speak of a surprise. Because as in 2020-2021 (3-0, December 16, 2020), and last season, exactly at the same time, on the 3rd day of L1, August 21, 2021 (2-0), RC Lens again won in Monaco, with authority (4-1), this Saturday. Franck Haise’s men thus temporarily take the lead in Ligue 1 (two wins, one draw) pending the results of Marseille (against Nantes this Saturday, 9 p.m.) and PSG, in Lille on Sunday (8:45 p.m.).

Both well organized and inspired in their technical sequences, sometimes of a very high level, the Lensois had already mastered the whole of the first period. Thus, they logically led 2-0, thanks to goals from Openda, perfectly served by Pereira Da Costa (7th), then from Machado, with a cross shot from the left (38th), on a ball from Seko Fofana badly negotiated by Vanderson (38th, definitely in difficulty because he also came close to the csc, 14th). Logically, because Fofana (18th) then Sotoca (20th, 45th + 2) were also threatening.

But this ASM in difficulty which had only one opportunity in the game – Minamino stumbled on an excellent Samba (16th) – was able to reduce the score before the break by Badiashile with a header, on a corner from Caio Henrique (41st ).

However, this did not really revive the Monegasques, who were still quite apathetic after the restart. And punished a third time, following a slight fault by Embolo on Sotoca, offering a severe but not scandalous penalty to the Lensois, transformed into force of law by their captain, Seko Fofana (55th). Openda then came close to 4-1 twice, just before (69th) and just after (74th) the well-deserved expulsion of a Vanderson in total distress (for two yellows following two big fouls on the untenable Machado , 58th, 72nd).

But Racing will achieve this score well, thanks to a wild substitute, Wesley Said, author of a superb sequence to score with the right foot at the near post (78th). The Sang et Or supporters could exult.

The player: sparkling Seko Fofana

Admittedly, Seko Fofana, the Ivorian international captain of RC Lens (27 years old, 6 caps, 1 goal), missed a great opportunity by crossing his right recovery a little too much (18th). But with his incessant activity in the middle and his sometimes diabolical technical accuracy, he literally crushed the Monegasques. At the origin of the second goal (38th) – even if he will not be credited with a decisive pass on this one – he scored the third from the penalty spot (55th) and did indeed give the fourth (to Wesley Said, 78th). The coveted midfielder therefore already has a goal and two offerings in L1 this season.

With seven points already on the clock, RC Lens, which finished 7th in Ligue 1 in 2020-2021 then in 2021-2022, is already doing better after three days than in its two seasons since its return to Ligue 1 (respectively six, then five dots).
