List of Blues: what you need to know about Eduardo Camavinga

Dynamics of the season

Having started five games out of twelve in La Liga, two out of six in C1, Eduardo Camavinga does not start at Real. This, especially at 19, is nothing to be ashamed of. The fault indeed in a very condensed Madrid midfield (Kross, Modric, Tchouaméni, Valverde) in the middle of which he must evolve. The 19-year-old has the merit of being Carlo Ancelotti’s most used substitute. Off the bench, he offers a different profile to the Real midfielder with his speed of percussion. Even if his coach expects even better from him (Ancelotti had declared, at the very start of the season, that he and Aurélien Tchouaméni had to do more).

History in Blue

In 2019, Eduardo Camavinga had a resounding debut in Blue. On November 11, he was summoned for the first time to Espoirs, just a week after his naturalization (he was born in Angola and has Angolan and Congolese nationalities). At the end of August 2020, he was called up for the first time by Didier Deschamps and celebrated his second cape in the League of Nations a month later (October 7), opening the scoring against Ukraine with an astonishing return. He then becomes, at 17 years and 332 days, the second youngest scorer in the history of the Blues. Last summer, in the middle of Pogba, Kanté and Rabiot in particular, he was not selected by Deschamps to compete in the Euro. In 2022, he only played one meeting with the France team, during the last meeting.

Potential World Cup role

Often on the bench in club and having played only one match in Blue this year, Camavinga leaves with a slight delay on his competitors. Especially since Aurélien Tchouaméni (more often a starter than him at Real), Mattéo Guendouzi (more often called up to the Blues), Adrien Rabiot (in very good shape with Juve) and Youssouf Fofana (key player in the Monegasque squad ) scored points. He is nevertheless in the fight for a starting place.

His speed, his percussion, his freshness can make him an asset for Deschamps in midfield. But his young age and his only four selections for the France team may lead DD to favor (slightly) more experienced players. He will then be able to take on the role of blaster when leaving the bench.
