Manchester United win the League Cup against Aston Villa after a crazy second half

The poster took on the appearance of revenge. Just four days after meeting in the Premier League (3-1 win for Aston Villa at Villa Park for the first of Unai Emery on the Villans bench), Manchester United and Aston Villa met this Thursday evening, this time at Old Trafford, as part of the third round of the League Cup. Led twice, the locals ended up winning (4-2) after a second act with twists and turns.

If Manchester United generally dominated the first period (55% possession), neither team had yet shot on goal after 20 minutes. The rest of the debates before half-time were more eventful with in particular a header above Dalot at the far post (24th), a rescue from McTominay on his line after a returning corner shot by Young (31st) or a shot off from the frame of the same Young (33rd).

Six goals in the second period

But it wasn’t really until we got back from the locker room that the match started. After a perfect counter-attack, Aston Villa first surprised MU, thanks to Watkins (48th). A few seconds later, at the kickoff, Anthony Martial came to equalize (49th) on a perfect serve from Bruno Fernandes.

About ten minutes later (61st), Aston Villa took the lead when Bailey’s header forced Diogo Dalot to push the ball into the back of his net. But once again, MU was able to pick up very quickly (67th) thanks to Marcus Rashford. In the last quarter of an hour (78th), the Mancunians took the lead for the first time in the game, by Bruno Fernandes, taking advantage of a recovery error from Villans. They then folded the meeting thanks to McTominay (90 + 1st).

With this victory, the Mancunians, behind in the Premier League (23 points, 11 points behind leader Arsenal), can still hope for a victory in the League Cup. The rest of the competition will take place just after the World Cup, around December 21 (exact dates to be confirmed).
