The second free practice session of the Belgian GP on Friday afternoon was hardly less hectic than the first one, who had seen the eruption of a red flag. A shower fell again during the last minutes and the pilots had to acclimatize. Adaptation will in any case be the watchword of the weekend at Spa-Francorchamps, where several leaders of the Championship will start at the bottom of the grid.
But the penalties did not prevent them from driving fast and it was indeed the first two in the general classification who finished first in the EL2. Max Verstappen (Red Bull) set the fastest lap, by far, in 1’45”507, ahead of Charles Leclerc (Ferrari), relegated to 0”862. Best time in the first session, Carlos Sainz (Ferrari) fell to 5th place, while Lando Norris (McLaren) was 3rd and Lance Stroll (Aston Martin) 4th. Lewis Hamilton is in 6th position.
The French did not have a flamboyant start. Pierre Gasly (AlphaTauri) occupies the provisional 14th place and Esteban Ocon (Alpine) the 16th, more than two seconds behind Verstappen.
