The Milwaukee Bucks, 2021 NBA champions, are still undefeated, while all teams have played between five and seven games at the start of the 2022-2023 season. On Saturday, the Wisconsin franchise also took the game to the top of the Eastern Conference. Leader of this conference, Milwaukee has indeed beaten the Atlanta Hawks at home (123-115) who was trailing them in the standings.
Antetokounmpo and Holiday both at 34 pts
The visitors led much of the first quarter, before the Bucks took control (23-21, 8th) and kept it for most of the rest of the game. But they were never able to outrun their opponent. Atlanta, at worst, was 12 units behind in the third quarter (74-62, 29th). And, five minutes from the buzzer, the Hawks even went ahead (107-106), for a short time.
Milwaukee finally made the difference definitively, going 7-0 in the last 40 seconds. All of these points were scored by Giannis Antetokounmpo and Jrue Holiday. Both men shone on Saturday, each scoring 34 points and also posting a double-double. Antetokounmpo (who scored just four points in the first period) grabbed 17 rebounds, while Holiday provided 12 assists. Brook Lopez also participated in the success of the Bucks, with his 21 pts.
42 points for Trae Young
In the ranks of the Atlanta Hawks, Trae Young has also been impressive. The leader of the Georgia franchise scored 42 points (15/32 in shooting including 5/10 at three points). Dejounte Murray was also highlighted, with 21 points. Clint Capela “doubled” (11 points, 10 rebounds) and Justin Holiday, Jrue’s big brother, scored 10 points in 13 minutes on the floor. Aaron, the third brother, settled for three points.
The Milwaukee Bucks continue to sit atop the Eastern Conference (and the NBA) with five wins in as many games played. They are now ahead of the Cleveland Cavaliers. Atlanta, for its part, fell back to third place. The Hawks will try to revive Monday at the Toronto Raptors. On the same day, Milwaukee will host the Detroit Pistons.
