Montpellier wins in Toulon and climbs to seventh place in the Top 14

The game: 16-26

The shock of this last day before the break was crucial for both teams: Toulon had the opportunity to reach the top 6 and even climb alone to second place in the Championship in the event of an improved victory. Opposite, Montpellier (11th before the match) had to earn points at all costs to get back to the top of the table. Yet diminished by the absence of several injured players or summoned to the selection, the Hérault club is the big winner (16-26) of this evening at the Félix-Mayol stadium on Sunday.

Despite an aggressive defense of the Toulonnais, Montpellier started the game better by inflicting great pressure on the rear of the RCT. Yacouba Camara’s try was obtained this way in the 17th minute (0-10) after the error of Toulonnais Gaël Dréan who lost the ball a few meters from his goal line. Drafts in the transmissions and stumbling on a well-organized Montpellier defense, the Toulonnais were not dangerous and returned to the locker room with a disappointing score (0-13).

More patient during the attacks after the break, the Varois caused faults which allowed them to reduce the gap immediately in the second half. Then the entry of Baptiste Serin in the 54th did a lot of good. The international scrum half (42 caps) energized the Toulon game thanks to his precision and his kicking game, while Montpellier decreased in intensity in the physical duels and conceded a try synonymous with equalization (Sitaleki Timani in the 59th, 16-16). But Montpellier did not completely sink and retained its effectiveness in attack. After a big streak of possession, the Héraultais scored the winning try in the 74th minute by Simon-Pierre Chauvac. A second success in a row which allows them to overtake Toulon in the standings, taking 7th place.

The number of Top 14 wins and losses for both teams. Montpellier now has 23 points and overtakes Toulon, which has 22.

The player: Louis Carbonel made his ex suffer

The Montpellier opener hurt to his former teammates. Always fair in his transmissions, the ex-Toulonnais was able to vary his team’s offensive game by attempting a few daring kicks above the defense, and was impeccable against the posts to convert the domination of the MHR. He is the author of 17 MHR points.
