Nice surprised by Maccabi Tel-Aviv in the first leg of the Europa League Conference

The game: 1-0

OGN Nice expected a warm welcome in the cauldron of Maccabi Tel-Aviv, and they were not disappointed, the 30,000 Israeli supporters having ignited the Bloomfield Stadium throughout the meeting. The Côte d’Azur club also expected to be superior to its opponent and it was, in large widths in the first period, then in a more measured way after returning from the locker room, but without ever taking the lead. And what had to happen happened, the French were punished a quarter of an hour from the end after a succession of hesitations and individual errors (see elsewhere).

Lucien Favre’s men flew over the first act and their missed opportunities will leave immense regrets. Kephren Thuram (21st) and Aaron Ramsey (30th) do not have much to blame themselves for their respective situations as the opposing goalkeeper Daniel Peretz pulled out all the stops. Established in place of Amine Gouiri, Rares Ilie cannot not say the same. The young rookie found himself alone against the empty goals, on the rebound after a dry strike from Andy Delort on the post (22nd), but he lacked responsiveness and his shot flew away.

The fact: The Nice defense passive on the Maccabi goal

The Niçois gradually lost control but they were hardly worried before the opener. All it took was a hot situation for the building to collapse. A long ball deflected from the head placed incoming Stipe Perica face-to-face with Kasper Schmeichel. Abandoned by an apathetic central defense, the Danish goalkeeper hesitated before going out and he was lobbed like a bruise.

What turned into a poor performance could have become much worse if Youcef Atal and Melvine Bard had not played the firefighters on their line (77th). This defeat suffered in Israel, on the smallest of margins, is therefore far from being crippling. But it places Nice in a bad position before the return match which will be played at the Allianz Riviera next Thursday. Hoping for a more favorable outcome than that experienced by ASM in the Champions League, against PSV Eindhoven.
