Nigel Owens supports Mathieu Raynal after his decision in the Australia-New Zealand match

The target of numerous criticisms from Australia since Thursday, the French referee Mathieu Raynal also benefits from some support, starting with that, of weight, of the former Welsh referee Nigel Owens.

In Thursday’s game between Australia and New Zealand, Mr Raynal converted a penalty to the Wallabies’ advantage into scrum for the All Blacks due to the time it took Australian fly-half Bernard Foley to clear his side, despite several calls to order from the referee, as the end of regulation time approached.

In the process, the All Blacks had registered the winning try (39-37)triggering the incomprehension and/or the anger of the Australian staff and certain local media.

This Saturday, Nigel Owens brought his reading of the situation, sharing on Twitter a video of the action without any other comment than those of Mathieu Raynal captured by the micro-referee. We clearly hear the French referee asking Foley several times to hit the key without delay.

“Clear communication and warning addressed to the player (to tell him to play without wasting time). A fair and solid refereeing decision from Raynal in my opinion. Here, it is not up to the referee to learn but to the players to play when the referee asks for it”writes Owens.

Other voices, including those of former England international opener Andy Goode, were also heard in support of Mathieu Raynal’s decision.
