OM lose again against Frankfurt in the Champions League

The game: 0-1

Co-leader and undefeated in L1, OM are already struggling in the Champions League. Defeated on the field of Tottenham last week (0-2), the Olympians lost at home against Eintracht Frankfurt (0-1). The next two games against Sporting CP, leaders of the group with two successes, will already be crucial for Igor Tudor.

Like Deschamps, Baup, Anigo and Villas-Boas before him, the Croatian therefore lost for his first at the Vélodrome in the Champions League. His team has too rarely endangered Kevin Trapp (only 4 shots attempted inside the area). The Gerson-Sanchez-Payet trio lacked weight and inspiration. The Chilean found the small net (12th) and missed his recovery in front of the empty goal (23rd). Each time, Nuno Tavares had been behind the actions. And that is the problem: OM tried too hard to dismiss, with the Portuguese or Clauss, and neglected the interior of the game.

Opposite, the excellent Kamada (who failed on Lopez in the 81st), Lindström and especially Kolo Muani saw their work pay off as the meeting progressed. The Swede opened the scoring (43rd) and touched the bar (54th, see elsewhere). The French striker who arrived from Nantes hurt the local defense with his power and speed. He failed on Lopez, in the 75th, after a strong Marseille time. The latter had been triggered by the simultaneous entries of Suarez, Harit and Ünder. But Trapp had released a shot from Rongier (65th) and the Colombian, full axis, had completely missed his recovery (71st). The ” highest level of world football “, as Igor Tudor says, still punished OM.

Marseille have lost 16 of their last 17 Champions League matches, the only exception dating back to their last home meeting in the competition in December 2020 against Olympiakos (2-1).

The turning point: Bailly’s mistake

Replaced in the 65th due to an adductor injury, Eric Bailly has often been inspired against Frankfurt, especially on his tackles (39th, 64th). But the former Mancunian (28), perhaps intoxicated by his level and his solidity, tried a dangerous gesture in front of his surface: on an aerial ball, under pressure from opposing attackers, he missed a chest drop. This totally destabilized his team, forced to defend by running towards their goal. This is how Rongier deflected a center from Kolo Muani in the feet of Lindström. Preferred to Dina Ebimbe, the Swede did not miss the opportunity and opened the scoring. He could have even doubled the lead, but his shot from a tight angle hit Lopez’s bar.
