Paulo Fonseca, Lille coach: “We had to change something”

“The quality of your game was unanimously praised after the Sunday success against Monaco (4-3). How did you manage to convey your ambitious playing principles?
The players understood it after the game in Lorient (1-2) : we had to change something in our defensive organization. We did it and the results are there (3 wins in a row). Everyone understood that to win, we had to have this attitude, this character on the pitch. But if the Monaco match was magnificent, we must continue to improve, there are many things where we can do it. We didn’t have a perfect match, we won, we showed character, ambition, but there are a lot of things that I didn’t like. We must continue to work.

Adam Ounas and Jonathan Bamba uncertain, Timothy Weah could have his chance, given what he is showing at the moment…
Tim has played very well in the last two games, he can have a chance to play. I’m not sure of the team but I have an idea. He works a lot every day. He is an important player for a coach because he is a team player. He is very fast, he is a different player for me. A very important player in the squad.

LOSC has been doing very well in Lyon in recent years…
Yes, but it will be a very difficult match, a very intense match, we have to play with intensity. But the players are prepared because they know perfectly well how difficult this match is, we expect a big team, a difficult, aggressive match.

What has changed the arrival of Laurent Blanc on the OL bench ?
I’m not going to make a comparison because it’s unfair for the former coach (Peter Bosz). Obviously there is a new coach, the atmosphere is different, they won their last match (Montpellier). They changed their system, I don’t know if they will keep it. Blanc put in players who didn’t play under the old coach, I think they are very motivated.

As the breaks approach, some coaches offer challenges to their players to gain rest days. Is this your case?
I offered something to the players for the last four matches, they accepted the challenge with pleasure, we will see if we will have more holidays. It will depend on the number of points we will obtain by the break. »
