Big surprise at the US Open: Simona Halep, seeded No. 7, was beaten in the first round by Ukrainian Daria Snigur (6-2, 0-6, 6-4), from qualifying. The Romanian player winner of the Toronto tournamentthus leaves the table in her first match against the 124th in the world.
A rather unexpected poor performance from the former world No. 1 (in 2017), crowned at Roland-Garros (2018) and Wimbledon (2019), who seemed to have made her comeback in Ohio a year after dropping out of the Top 10 due to a series of shoulder and thigh injuries. She was part US Open favorites.
Her match was like a roller coaster, after losing the first set and winning the second, during which she gave a scathing response without leaving a single game for her rival. Visibly physically challenged on the Louis-Armstrong court, Halep then let go of her opponent who led 5-1 in the last set, before coming back to 5-4, having erased two match points in the process.
The third was nevertheless the good one for the young Daria Snigur (20 years old) who will be opposed in the next round to the Polish Magdalena Frech (103rd) or the Canadian Rebecca Marino (106th).
