Will the Chinese Grand Prix finally return to the calendar? Absent since 2019 due to the pandemic, the Chinese round is still on the program for the 2023 season, a spokesperson for the Championship assured Wednesday. This responds to news from the BBCpublished on Tuesday, which revealed that the event would be canceled again due to the country’s very strict policy in the fight against Covid.

“We continue to monitor the Covid situation in China and maintain a close dialogue with the promoter and the authorities, explains the spokesperson to AFP. China has been included in the 2023 calendar and, until we announce otherwise, this remains the case. »

F1 not exempt from strict regulations

The GP therefore remains scheduled for April 16, 2023 in Shanghai, the fourth round ofa record season of 24 Grands Prix. If it were to be cancelled, the appointment would likely not be rescheduled. A 23-race season would still be a record.

“The main sticking point is that F1 personnel would not be exempt from quarantine requirements in the event of Covid-19 infection”, explained the BBC on Tuesday. In China, people who test positive must respect strict quarantines with almost daily PCR tests.
