The United States hooked by Wales for their entry into the World Cup

The game: 1-1

Eight and a half years after their last success in the World Cup (2-1 against Ghana, in the first round, June 16, 2014 in Brazil), the United States are still waiting. They thought they had done the hardest part on Monday, opening the scoring against Wales. But it was without counting on the reaction of a courageous opponent, although limited in the game, who hung a good draw in the end (1-1). In group B, already clearly dominated by EnglandAmericans and Welsh, who are aiming for the round of 16, missed a great opportunity to take an option on qualification.

Clearly dominating for a big hour, Team USA logically took the lead, after a first header from Josh Sargent on the post (10th), thanks to Timothy Weah. The LOSC player was well served by Christian Pulisic full axis (36th). But in the second half, the partners of Gareth Bale, transparent until then, reversed the scenario. Much more enterprising, they managed to equalize thanks to a penalty obtained and transformed by their captain (82nd), more than ever national top scorer (41 achievements). The recent MLS champion with Los Angeles FC thus played a bad trick on his new adopted country.

The player: Weah at the rendezvous

A surprise holder given his start to the season disrupted by injuries (6 matches in Ligue 1), Timothy Weah responded for his first World Cup match. The son of the Ballon d’Or France Football in 1995 can already boast of having done better than his father (Georges), who has never played in a World Cup in his career.

Aligned on the right side, the Lille striker (22 years old, 26 caps) was very active, especially in the first period. After a good sequence which could have been decisive (9th), he scored by taking advantage of his speed (36th). His fourth goal in selection allows him to succeed Pelé, last scorer before him against Wales at the World Cup, in the quarter-finals of the 1958 edition (1-0).

The United States have never had a goalless draw (0-0) in 34 World Cup matches. It is the selection that has played the most without conceding any 0-0.
