Unvaccinated players will continue to be tested weekly in the NBA

End of mandatory masks and tests for everyone in the NBA. The North American League released on Tuesday the update of its health protocol related to Covid-19. “NBA players and unvaccinated employees will be required to undergo weekly Covid-19 testing this season”is it in particular written in the press release sent to the 30 franchises.

Note that the elements concerned will not be able to make the trip to Toronto, Canada. Those vaccinated – the very large majority of the NBA ecosystem – are invited to take a booster dose of vaccination in order to prolong their protection against Covid-19. On the other hand, the obligation to wear a mask is removed for everyone.

Disappearance of tests for vaccinated people

For the players or members of a staff in question, no test will be required, unless “the team doctor, a league doctor or a governmental authority so requests”, added the NBA. In particular, this could change depending on the evolution of the epidemic situation in the United States in the coming months.

“I have learned over the last two and a half years not to make predictions when it comes to Covid, just to say that we will be prepared for whatever comes our way”, recalled the commissioner of the NBA, Adam Silver, during a meeting organized in mid-July. The league had faced a large and long wave of coronavirus from December 2021.

The coming season will officially open on October 18, but will be preceded by the traditional training camps starting at the end of September.
